With the museum being a great success for the 12 months since opening, it made sense for the museum to be extended to house new exhibits.
There is also a small tea wagon outside the museum, so the guys wanted to have a space inside the extension for customers to take a break in the warm.
We were asked to design the café in a 1940’s style, which the volunteers at the museum could decorate in the quiet period following the summer holidays.
We were also asked to design and theme a German bunker, complete with pillbox which had a video playing of Omaha beach in the hours before the D-day landings. Our designers created a 3min loop-able animation of the beach, complete with animated aircraft and sound effects created by Jay at 1eight Creative Audio.
The exterior of the extension and entrance corridor were themed as an LCT Landing Craft as these vehicles were based at Portland port before heading to battle at Omaha.
As always, it was an interesting and humbling experience to learn more of the story of Portland during WW2.
